The number of motorists arrested in Singapore for drink-driving last year was 13 per cent lower than it was in 2015. It still remains a concern. This leads to more laws being implemented.

Mr Desmond Lee, Senior Minister of State, Minister of Home Affairs and Minister of National Development gave a speech at the launch of the SgCarMart Anti-Drink Drive Campaign 2017. He addressed the drink-driving situation last night.

Mr Lee mentioned in his speech that more than 1500 motorists were apprehended for drink-driving last year between January and September. The loss of lives through drink-driving related accidents is preventable through public education campaigns, enforcement and deterrence.

The Government will also take preventive measures by reviewing existing penalties for various traffic offences as specified by the Road Traffic Act. Stiffer penalties will be used as a strong deterrence against the driver under the influence of alcohol. Mr Lee also mentioned that the Government, “will seek to increase the penalties for offences that result in death or hurt to others” on drivers under substance influence or are repeat offenders.

“Lives have been lost or ruined, because of the irresponsible actions of drink-drivers,” said Mr Lee.

He encouraged people to play a key role in keeping themselves and their loved ones safe on the road. People should be reminded to leave their vehicles at home if they intend to go drinking and opt for the use of public transport, taxis or valet services. Entertainment outlets were also recommended to remind their patrons not to drink and drive, and also provide overnight parking and valet services as an option.

“We need to exercise self-discipline by not drinking and driving,”. Mr Lee added.
