Permanent changes like tattoos could make individuals feel better about themselves.

A 24-year-old girl in Australia went blind for almost three weeks in October 2019, after she tattooed her the whites of her eyeballs to become blue.

These behaviours are becoming a norm in society as more people are finding positivity in the art of tattoos and body modifications.

“There is a lot of positive things involved and even if it’s negative, it sounds like it’s something that they’re grieving about. It still ends up with a positive outcome,” said Sumithra Debi, a 38-year-old tattoo artist with more than 22 years of experience.

There are multiple reasons as to why tattoos have a positive effect on individuals.

In Sumithra’s experience, there are many individuals who get tattoos and body modifications because they are going through a change in their lives.

These changes could be a loss, a celebration or simply the individual’s need to have a change in their life.

Body modifications in the form of tattoos are found to be helpful in giving a sense of closure to those grieving as they mark their loss in the form of a memorial tattoo.

It is also helpful in boosting self-esteem in women who survived breast cancer.

In cases where the women go through a breast reconstruction surgery, recreating the areola lost during the surgery is a form of a tattoo.

This type of tattoo procedure helps the women to overcome the trauma that they have gone through and in the end, the tattoo empowers them.

There are also people who find comfort in getting tattoos to mark that they are changing whenever they feel stagnant in their lives.

Roszaini Zaidi, 24, Singpost courier got his first tattoo to honour his mother and soon, it became his passion to collect them.

“I fell in love with the needle. The feeling of it poking my skin is comforting,” he said.

Roszaini felt that with his tattoos, he feels freer and is confident with his own skin.
