An Nsman accused of cheating and moneylending refused to plead guilty in Singapore State court on January 30, 2019.

Joey Lim appeared stressed as he stood in Courtroom 26 for his hearing. He is charged with theft, cheating and moneylending. However, he has only pleaded guilty for his theft charge.

Lim told His Honour Judge Kenneth Yap that he wants to claim trial for his other two charges involving a stolen credit card. The incident happened on December 14, 2016, where Lim and his friends used the card to cheat cashiers at numerous convenience stores. They bought $178 worth of cigarettes from the stores all in one night.

Lim said that he was not aware of who owned the card or where the money was from and had “just spent it”.

Judge Yap did not believe Lim’s explanation. He listed down the timings of the purchases made using the same card from the night of the incident. He indicated that the timings were only a few minutes apart.

Judge Yap asked Lim, “You never suspected a thing?”

If convicted, Lim could be sentenced to imprisonment of up to five years with a minimum of three strokes of the cane and be fined no more than $50,000.

The Deputy Public Prosecutors working on the case still needs a week to conduct further investigations.

The case will be adjourned to March 26, 2019, in Court 26 at 11.30 p.m.
