Merely Ice Cream showcasing a mural by a local artist

A cold dessert. A chill ambience. Merely Ice Cream has been serving their one of a kind ice cream flavours ever since 2012. A tiny shop that could easily be missed at first glance.

Located at 91 Bencoolen Street, right opposite of Nanyang School of the Fine Arts (NAFA), Merely Ice Cream is hidden away amongst the busy business and school district. The small shop could easily occupy around 20 - 25 people at one time. Usually filled with students, Merely Ice Cream is a popular hangout spot especially with the Arts students from NAFA.

The minimal yet rustic feel of the place is accompanied by beautiful murals and illustrations that make the small ice cream shop feel welcoming. The furniture adds on to the ambience with neutral colours and a splash of yellow to brighten up the place. This also makes the place cheerful for the patrons. The relaxing atmosphere of the place is definitely one of the reasons why students choose the place to spend their time after a long tiring day. The mood of this particular ice cream shop is of course not the main reason why this ice cream shop is so popular.

Opened five years ago, Merely Ice Cream previously had three owners who just wanted to start a business. Their business has now become a popular artistic hang out with uniquely delicious ice cream favours. Emily, a part-timer of almost four years, said that working at the ice cream parlour has been great for her. The flexibility there could accommodate her busy schedule as a full-time student. She especially loves the culture that she shares with the other staff at the parlour.

With more than 15 flavours to choose from, patrons are often spoilt for choice when choosing an ice cream flavour. Thankfully, this petite ice cream parlour lets you have a little taste before making a decision. From Lychee Beer Sorbet to Thai Milk Tea, Merely Ice Cream has been coming up with their own flavours since they first opened. The servings are worth the price at $3.50 for a single scoop which is as big as a baseball.

The ice cream, that is good enough on its own, can be accompanied with waffles or a waffle cone. The ice cream made at this joint is the kind that starts with a velvety feel around your mouth. It then melts onto your tongue. It lets you slowly savour the rich flavour that they have perfected so well. The Thai Milk Tea ice cream is almost as good as the authentic milk tea found in Thailand. The creaminess of the Thai Milk Tea ice cream will have anyone asking for a second scoop.

“Everything is made from scratch!” said Kelly, one of the workers responsible for the creation of the ice creams.

All the recipes are crafted by the workers at the shop itself with no online recipes or whatsoever. Inspired by the different seasons and festivals, Merely Ice Cream knows just what kind of flavours that fit the occasion.
